Board of the Apprentice Wall Tapestry

The Apprentice approaches a luminous Temple between the red and white pillars of Memphis–Misraïm. Three steps and three windows give the scene its measured rhythm. In the foreground, the rough ashlar, mallet, chisel, square, and compasses speak to the beginning of the work; a pointed cubic stone stands farther along the path. The plumb-rule and level jewels mark the pillars, while a small architectural plan evokes Wisdom, Strength, and Beauty. French tracing-board composition meets Egyptian Revival color and lotus ornament in an image of preparation and possibility.
